We have issued a powerful public statement calling for fair, recognition and compensation for deafblind interpreters/guide-interpreters at international events, forums, and high-level meetings.
As the global voice of persons with deafblindness—one of the most underrepresented and diverse disability groups—WFDB continues to champion equitable access to information and communication for all. The statement underscores the urgent need to address systemic disparities in how deafblind interpreting services are funded, valued, and implemented around the world.
Despite growing recognition of the need for accessible communication, deafblind participants continue to face systemic barriers due to underfunded or unpaid interpreting support. These roles—distinct from standard sign language interpreters—include not only communication but also environmental description, mobility guidance, and tailored support.
WFDB urges governments, international organizations, and donors to:
-
Recognize deafblind interpreting as a specialized profession;
-
Ensure equal funding for deafblind and Deaf participants;
-
Establish international fee standards;
-
Invest in interpreter education and training.
This call to action reinforces the right to equal access under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
