Croatia’s Prime Minister Highlights Campaign for International Day of Deafblindness During UN General Debate

Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, addresses the General Debate

Mr. Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, addressed the General Debate of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, 2024. During his intervention, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of mainstreaming disability and outlined the country’s commitment to supporting initiatives such as the recognition of the International Day of Deafblindness.

The World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB) extends its profound gratitude to Croatia for its leadership in this initiative, which has the potential to be a transformative development for the deafblind community.

In his address, the Prime Minister stated: “Croatia also advocates a comprehensive approach to issues affecting persons with disabilities. This includes mainstreaming disability in all fields of human rights. With this in mind, at the UN, we will lead an effort by a cross-regional group of countries to proclaim the International Day of Deafblindness. This resolution will hopefully contribute to understanding and inspire national and legal recognition of deafblindness as a distinct and unique disability worldwide.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration to make the International Day of Deafblindness a reality!
