WFDB Joins the ASSIST Project to Promote Inclusive Healthcare for Mothers with Disabilities

Assist Project Logo

We are proud to announce its partnership in the ASSIST Project, a three-year initiative co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme. This groundbreaking project aims to address discrimination and attitudinal biases among healthcare professionals—including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and psychologists—toward women with disabilities during all phases of motherhood.

Objectives

The primary objective of the ASSIST Project is to create welcoming and inclusive healthcare services for mothers and women with disabilities. To achieve this, the project will develop a forward-looking training curriculum for medical students and healthcare providers, supported by an innovative Digital Ecosystem. Additionally, it will implement outreach and advocacy activities to strengthen the capacity of NGOs in driving policy change.

By addressing the significant impact of social factors and attitudes on the experiences of disabled mothers, the project seeks to foster positive and inclusive behavior among medical professionals.

WFDB’s Role

WFDB brings unique expertise and perspective from the deafblind community, including valuable insights from mothers with deafblindness. These contributions will help ensure that the project reflects the diverse experiences of women with disabilities and advocates for their rights within healthcare systems.

Partnership

The ASSIST Project unites a diverse consortium of 10 partners from four countries—Greece, Italy, Belgium, and Ireland—including three higher education institutions and seven organizations focused on the rights of mothers, persons with disabilities, education, and digital innovation. WFDB joins this collaboration to advance its commitment to creating a more inclusive world, where mothers with deafblindness have equitable access to healthcare and support during parenthood.
